Telecom improved services by building API integration environment on Google Cloud

A North America telecom company modernized service vendor integration method with the help of Qualicom Innovations to capitalize on the power of cloud investments.

The Results

Accelerates software delivery by 2-3x for IT teams using CI/CD model in an agile cloud-native development environment

Gains ability to better identify data issues real-time and respond faster to improve service and MTTR

Enables parallel data processing with dynamic scaling on Google Cloud

Opens door to further service vendor capability integration using API model and cloud-native architecture

This telecom company worked with authorized service vendors across North America to process device repair orders and related inventory movement tracking. Using traditional file processing approach, the company and its service vendors relied upon file sharing on SFTP sites and dated data workflows that required laborious and inefficient operation support efforts whenever there were data issues. They realized that further development of new features and process automation using such legacy solution had challenges with scalability, efficiency, and ROI, and looked for better technology usage practices to

streamline operations and improve service delivery time to their customers.

The company turned to Qualicom Innovations to discover and implement an application modernization solution that could help them overcome their previous limitations and achieve greater business goals.

Qualicom helped this company achieve a successful modernization by:

  1. Determining goals and objectives
  2. Assessing current legacy solution capabilities and deficiencies
  3. Defining future state
  4. Building the modernization solution using Cloud-Native & DevOps approach

Inspiration to modernize

The business units involved in this engagement handled product development and operational support. They had some very specific goals:

  • Address deficiencies and inefficiencies that existed because of the legacy system
  • Improve the reliability and scalability of partner and service vendor integration
  • Build an enterprise platform to support future growth

Assessment of legacy system capability

One of the first challenges with legacy system was that it could be difficult to understand because it became complex and confusing after years of customizations and upgrades. Documentation was outdated, incomplete or misleading, as it might not reflect the current state of the software.

Qualicom analyzed and carefully documented the primary functions that the legacy software served, and the understanding why the company built it for the current state. We shared our findings with the project team to help them fully appreciate the legacy software capabilities and feel comfortable enough with the scope to move forward with modernization.

Getting prepared for the API future

The business units experienced deficiencies and inefficiencies that existed because of legacy system limitations. They did not have real-time data validations and instant feedback to their service vendors. Operation teams would spend hours to find records in server logs to identify data issues that would need manual coordination and resolution with service vendors. These caused delays in service delivery time to their customers.

During the discovery phase for defining future state, the project stakeholders appreciated our discussion on adopting an API-first strategy to address the growing demand for real time data, and how organizations can gain significant efficiencies by building modern microservices and event-driven APIs in the cloud environment.

Qualicom helped them to rearchitect the data flow using well-designed APIs with real-time validation and best practice of error handling. The integration with service vendors was greatly simplified. While streamlining operational support improved service and mean-time-to-resolve (MTTR), business units gained more time for future product development.

Exploring the power of Google Cloud

As part of the new microservices-driven architecture, Qualicom modernized workloads into Cloud-Native software and deployed them in the cloud to realize benefits of the security, reliability, and scalability of containerized Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) clusters on Google Cloud.

We implemented event-driven solution with Pub/Sub pattern that transformed the business from doing linear and sequential processing in legacy system into the modernized asynchronous event-processing powerhouse with dynamic scaling of Google Cloud.

There was a strong sense of partnership between Qualicom and the project team. Our architect and engineers worked alongside our client’s architects and engineers. There were continuous transfer of knowledge and decision-making happened jointly throughout the implementation of the modernization. Because of this collaboration, we helped our client to prepare for their cloud journey using the powerful capabilities of Google Cloud.

Getting set-up for continuous innovations

The company viewed increasing speed to market on new services and features, while transitioning to Continuous-Integration/Continuous-Deployment (CI/CD) model as critical to improving market competitiveness.

By creating Cloud-Native software with CI/CD model using DevOps delivery approach, we helped our client to set up CI/CD pipeline and test automation integration so that they are equipped with the tools and processes that accelerate software delivery.

Google Cloud provides a rich set of tools for DevSecOps including tools for creating automated builds, running automated tests, scanning artifacts for security vulnerabilities, monitoring, debugging with better observability, and many more with frequent updates. By building Cloud-Native software on Google Cloud, we lay solid foundation to support continuous innovations for the years to come.

At Qualicom, we help our customers with every step in their cloud journey and collaborate with them to achieve their business goals.
